Located in Carp, Ontario, the Diefenbunker Museum is a 100,000 square foot underground bunker built between 1959 and 1961 to house over 500 government and military officials in the event of a nuclear war. Nicknamed after Prime Minister John Diefenbaker, it served as the Central Emergency Government Headquarters until its decommissioning in 1994. Today, over 50,000 visitors roam the halls, gaining firsthand experience of what it would have been like to be stationed underground, for a period of up to 30 days, during the Cold War.
The Diefenbunker Museum is located approximately 40 minutes west of downtown Ottawa, north of Highway 417 on Carp Road.
